HER parents divorced when she was three and when her mother’s new boyfriend became part of their family, the 10-year-old thought she would finally have a father figure to protect her.
Instead, he beat and raped her until she was 14 years old.
The girl kept the rapes to herself as she was afraid her stepfather would beat her, and that her family would not believe her.
The abuse came to light when the girl’s biological father and his new wife took her to the hospital for the bruises on her body.
Yesterday, the 40-year-old stepfather was sentenced to 26 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to two counts of rape.
Another two counts of rape were taken into consideration. The offences took place between 2006 and 2010.
The parties are not named as the High Court has ordered that the victim cannot be identified.
The court heard yesterday that the girl lived with her mother and younger brother after her parents divorced in 1999.
In 2004, her mother met the accused on an Internet chat and they began dating. He moved into their flat in 2006 and married the girl’s mother in 2007.
But even before he married her mother, the man had raped the girl in 2006, when she was alone in the flat with him.
In 2007, she went to live with her grandparents and was spared the abuse but the accused asked her to move back home.
In 2008, he picked her up in his van from her madrasah class and told her to sit in the back.
He then drove the van to a multi-storey carpark and raped her.
In November 2010, the girl was beaten by her mother for playing on the computer when she was not allowed to.
She went to her aunt’s flat and her biological father took her back with him.
She told her father and stepmother that her stepfather beat her.
They decided to take her for a medical checkup and to make a police report.
On the way to the hospital, she asked her stepmother what would happen if she told the doctor about the beatings.
The woman said the man might be jailed.
The girl then asked what if someone committed rape.
Questioned further, she said her stepfather had also raped her.
In a statement read out in court, the girl said she realised that what the accused had done to her was wrong only when she learnt about sex in Secondary 2.
The girl said she felt relieved when her stepfather was arrested. She said she can forgive him but can never forget what he did to her.
