Ugly sales tactics of bridal company at shopping centre roadshow

STOMPer Stephanie paid for a wedding package for her special day at a roadshow, only to have the bridal studio renege on promises they made earlier.

Stephanie related her experience in an email today (Sep 20):

"I would like to share my unpleasant experience with a bridal studio.

"In May 2009, my fiance and I were approached by Vivocity's roadshow's bridal studio's representative. We were planning on marrying in a year or two so we started going through their promotional wedding packages with him.

"After a long talk, we decided on a package that cost S$3288. The package included a wedding car rental service. After considering we decided that we want to swap it for videography service. He stepped away to consult his boss then told us it was approved.

"We told him that we were likely to solemnize first and have the wedding dinner on a later date. He told us confidently that the photographer and videographer will be there on both ceremonies even if they are on separate days. He told us very kindly that we can always compromise and reminded us repeatedly to confirm the solemnization date so that he can arrange manpower for the shoot.

"Happy with the deal, we put down a S$1000 deposit. He then opened an invoice for us which stated my entitlements and quickly ran through it with us. Thinking the shop was reputable we left the the roadshow without carefully reading it twice without him around.

"With my solemnization set on the Sept 21, I called to confirm the names of the photographer and videographer. To my greatest displeasure, I was told I did not have photography and videography services on my solemnization!

"I found out I had to pay $480 to have a photographer for my solemnization and $900 for a videographer. The boss even told me there was no way she would swap from car rental to videography because of the huge price difference!

"This is absolutely ridiculous!

"This is a lesson learnt. So please, check your invoices carefully and read the fine prints before making any payment or signing any documents because even reputable companies can go back on their word.

"You can't be too careful."

In the process of planning my marriage I learned this hard lesson too. Most of these 'cheapo package' bridal shops are a waste of money and will give you nightmares. If you want a pleasant experience, fork out a bit more money and go to real boutiques.

It's worth every cent in terms of service and quality -- and if you compare the package details, you're paying only a bit more for much better quality. Cheapo, dirty-tactic shops give you a low price upfront, but leave out many essential services you need to top up on.
