The Straits Times published a lengthy editorial today using the example of previous MPs from the now defunct Barisan Sosialist as well as the PAP to defend the candidacy of embattled PAP newbie candidate Tin Pei Ling.
Mr Lim Chin Siong, a co-founder of the PAP, was only 22 years old when he was elected into the legislative assembly in 1959 while Mr Chia Thye Poh was 24 years old when he became a MP in 1963.
They were used to illustrate the point that age is not a barrier to becoming a MP to lessen the stiff opposition on the ground towards the fielding of Ms Tin in the coming general election.
It is a desparate attempt on the part of Straits Times to obfuscate the issue and to confuse Singaporeans in the hope that they will soon forget the fiasco.
Singaporeans are not against Ms Tin¡¯s age, but are appalled at the fact that she is likely to enter parliament on the coat-tails of heavyweight ministers without fighting an electoral battle unlike Mr Lim and Mr Chia who proved their worth by winning the election in a straight one-to-one fight.
An online petition calling for Ms Tin to be fielded in a single ward seat has garnered more than 4,000 signatures so far, but was not reported in any of the mainstream papers. (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/tinpeiling/)
Ms Tin, as well as senior PAP leaders, have continued to ¡®act blur¡¯ and did not respond to calls by Singaporeans to field her in a SMC.
