Why squash courts were closed

I REFER to the Forum Online letters by Mr Kurre Halvardsson ("No answer on closure of sports centre"; June 24) and Ms Nurul Athirah Abdul Latif ("Untimely closure of squash courts"; last Wednesday).
The Kallang Squash Centre (KSC) is closed from May 3 to Sept 11 to prepare for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG). During the Games, it will be used to support the tennis competition, to be held at the Kallang Tennis Centre (KTC).
In organising the YOG, our plan is to use existing facilities where possible to reduce the cost.
In Singapore, our sports facilities are mostly built for recreational purposes. To meet international competition requirements, substantial temporary overlays and infrastructure need to be added to the venues. The scope of work is larger than a single sports event due to the scale of the support services, security and safety concerns, and the logistical support needed.
Given the number of venues - 18 competition venues, 11 training venues and 14 non-sport venues - we have staggered the closure and installation dates to better manage our resources.
As the KTC is a relatively small venue, more space is needed to run the competition. Since May, facilities at KSC have been converted to a sports result room, timing and scoring room, athlete rest area and hospitality area. These were put to use during the Singapore Tennis Association-Sports Excellence 2nd Junior Age Championships last month, a national competition and validation exercise for the YOG.
From this month, more work is being done to convert the rest of the KSC facilities into a competition management room, offices, media room, racket stringing room, physiotherapy room and so on. This is more cost effective than installing temporary overlays. Given the scale of work, the entire area has been cordoned off to ensure the safety of the public.
As preparation works intensify at the various sports venues, we seek the public's understanding for the temporary closure of these sports facilities. Squash players may wish to use the facilities at St Wilfrid Squash Centre, Burghley Squash Centre or Yio Chu Kang Squash Centre.
