King International Business School (KIBS) a private education provider in Singapore is having its registration revoked after it was found to have allowed students to buy qualifications from the institution.
The Council of Private Education (CPE) found that the school had awarded diplomas to students who did not turn up for class or assessments at all.
This is the first time that the CPE has caught a 'degree mill' operating in Singapore.
KIBS registration as a private education provider will be revoked on May 5th but it has already been suspended from offering courses as of Monday (20 April).
According to the KIBS website, the school specialises in maritime studies and business management courses.
All 10 current students of the institution will receive full refunds of tuition fees or will be able to transfer to another suitable private institution.
The topic of fake degrees and integrity is a hot topic right now with the discovery of multiple fake degree holders working in local companies and even government agencies.
According to a statement from the Council of Private Educators, it appeared that the school was the one to offer students an opportunity to attain their qualifications without actually attending classes as they had said: “It also is unfortunate that some of the students chose to take up KIBS’s offer, instead of reporting them to CPE, implicating genuine students who took lessons in the process.”
If this is really the case, it cases question on the integrity of the academic board of the school.
Worse still, the academic board of KIBS actually has several members who are PBM and BBM holders and the website highlights integrity and honesty as part of their core values:

These awards are given by the government to long serving public servants. How can we be sure of the integrity of our public service when such practices of allowing students to buy diplomas is condoned by BBM and PBM holders?
The same people are also serving as mediators to settle resident disputes.
