Guangdong ties to deepen
By Francis Chan , COMPANIES CORRESPONDENT
MORE business tie-ups, cultural exchanges, job opportunities and a platform to sharpen city-building skills have been signalled by the Government in its efforts to deepen ties with Guandong province.
Acting Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew, told The Straits Times during an interview on Tuesday, that Singapore had to develop more than just economic ties with China's most populous province.
'I think beyond pure economics there are also other possibilities that we can work on together,' said Mr Lui, who also co-chairs the Singapore-Guangdong Collaboration Council (SGCC).
Guangdong's population almost breached the 100 million mark last year and it remains a top provincial trading partner, accounting for a third of Singapore's total trade with China in 2009.
Last year, local firms were involved in about 2,000 projects there with a cumulative investment of about US$6 billion (S$8.2 billion).
A week ago, Mr Lui and SGCC co-chairman and Guangdong vice-governor Wan Qingliang witnessed the signing of another six bilateral deals, ranging from building chemical tankers to manufacturing food and providing training services in Guangdong.
