Singapore to lure Indian tourists with casino

NEW DELHI: Come 2010, a grand casino will be thrown open at Singapore’s Sentosa island to attract tourists, especially from India, in large numbers.

Slated to be a family destination, the casino will be part of ‘Resorts World Sentosa’ project which includes Universal Studios’ theme park and marine life park.

“Singapore has been the top outbound destinations for Indians for many years and with these theme parks and casino, we hope to draw many more Indian travellers and give them a new reason to come again,’’ Resorts World Sentosa Vice-President (Communicatio n) Ms Krist Boo told presspersons here today.

Developed by Asia’s leading gaming operator, the Genting Group, at an estimated cost of $4.4 billion, the integrated island on Sentosa is expected to offer round-the-clock entertainment. The casino is coming up at about 15,000 sq.m. at the resort with m ore than 10 types of games.

Besides, there will be Universal Studios’ theme parks with 24 rides of which 18 are specially being redesigned for Singapore.

“There will be a castle from the world of Shrek, live shows and celebrity look-a-likes Marlilyn Monoroe and Betty Boop among other attractions,’’ she said.

Resorts World Sentosa expects to receive 13 million visitors in its first year of operations in 2010 with mainly tourists from India. According to data, about 780,000 Indians visited Singapore in 2008. — PTI

The IRs will not get much gambling profit from Indians - it's just not their culture to spend lavishly

They will just come here with their families, act big shot and demand top service service for whatever little stinking money they spend

Anyone who's done business deals with Indians will know their money is the hardest to earn

I wonder if they are actively marketing in China?

Might be a sensitive issue given China's recent stance on gambling and reduction on visas for Macau. Also wouldn't Beijing prefer that money be spent in Macau vs Singapore. Given Singapore's actual ownership in the local casinos (murky details on last minute Sands financing leads on to speculate) might make things more sensitive.

China mkt for S'pore casino is dead.

Only the Ah Neis mkt is alive and that is why STB is actively mktg the IRs in INDIA.

Typical Indian FT will be given $10 free chip and walk around the whole casino eating, drinking, free food and drinks.

They will aslo act big like high rollers. When their stomach are filled, they will try to exchange the $10 free chip for cash; failing which, they will gambel with it and make it look like they have just plonked down a $1,000,000 bet for all to see.
