In the Shit Times today, under the Review & Forum section, Senior writer Andy Ho wrote an article titled "Rename station after Nicoll Highway hero".

Now this Andy Ho character is one interesting or one fucking dull drone depending on your perception. A few of his articles that I've attempted to read but abandoned after the first two paragraphs because I couldn't decipher what the fuck he was saying. It's always in exaggerated and pompous prose. It's was if he had a smoke before picking up his pen.

Coming back to my point, what the fuck was he thinking when he steamed out his suggestion to rename Nicholl Highway Station? I have nothing but full admiration for Heng Yeow Peow. His unselfish heroism and ultimate sacrifice should remembered and be part of the local history curriculum being taught in schools but to name an MRT station after him? US Presidents are honored for 50 odd years over the service life span of an operational aircraft carrier, how long for an MRT station?

If the idea is accepted by the powers that be, what about our NS men who too had paid the ultimate sacrifice albeit not at their own choosing. Or is the real intent to name stations after people movers with enough cash ie. the super rich and powerful instead of the obvious historical locality under which they are named? In life, there are things you just don't fuck with!

I wonder how much Andy Ho is paid in the Toa Payoh Brothel!

I usually don't have much time for Mr Ho's articles either. In this case though he might have a point. Ho suggests the naming not simply because Mr Heng had made the ultimate sacrifice but that he had done so amid extreme bravery, i.e. that he had put the lives of oethers ahead of his own; and also that his remains are forever interred in that ground because it would have been too difficult and dangerous to retrieve it.

Your point about the lifespan of the name is appropriate and needs to be thought about. But I do think that Mr Heng's heroism should not just be in the history books - some would argue that putting anything in a history book is a sure way of getting it forgotten by most people.

Finally, I do not see how naming a station after him would invite more people to buy naming rights. As it is, naming rights are up for sale all the time. In fact, naming the station after Heng would be a refereshing change.

NS men who die in accidents, too bad, part of life. just another suay casualty of a war not yet fought.

Heng was a clear cut hero, who could have lived, but chose to go back to save others, and paid the ult

Then the MRT station would become a tombstone for a construction site accident with several casulties and a LTA cock-up.

There are better ways to honour Mr Heng's bravery, like the public giving his children a good scholarship and education.

Don't suppose station structure should serve as a tombstone for that tragic accident, instead, erecting a small monument there to remember all dead in the Nicoll Highway collapse would be best.

Maybe Andy Ho has a hidden agenda. He is afraid they might name the station after Mah Boh Tan or Wong Kan Seng or Jayakumar or Lim Shit Say or worst still Kua Geok Choo.

When you work in Toa Payoh Brothel, first and foremost, must cover backside.

Hence the gobbledygook. Smoke? Maybe, but more likely, a blowjob.

I usually give his crap a miss.

I used to work there. Spent too much time in one of the offices of the ex-ISD's meddling with their 'computer' and immediately got a complaint filed.

Sensitive shit place, the brothel.

Sometimes feel that it is better for this Andy guy to write in some science or medical journals rather than a mass circulation newspaper like ST.

I agree to name the station by his name. Mr. Heng, like most of us here, is a normal grass-root not belonging to the class of 'elites'. Looking at the names of the streets/roads, which are solely name after those powerful and rich.

Good ideas - a win-win outcome for his family and at the same time to honour those who have lost their lives building the station. Give that Station a unique character and history.

Place it somewhere together with some photos for people to read while waiting for the trains to come - like a little musuem.

In Hong Kong, people (usually civil servants) who died with exceptional bravery while on duty are buried at Gallant Garden at Wo Hop Shek Public Cemetery. In Singapore, we could consider building something similar to honour our dead heroes.

I agree with Andy Ho, yes I should be nae Heng Yeow Peow or maybe "Hero" station.

But obviously PAP will never allow that. If we have that name, it will remain all or us forever that LTA construction screw up there. The Government wants to be seen to be prefect and not reminded of such boo boos!
