SINGAPORE – A policeman was at work when he allegedly made off with cash totalling nearly $2,000 on two separate occasions in 2024.
Muhammad Amzath Khan Abuayubul Ansari, 24, who has since resigned from the Singapore Police Force (SPF), is also accused of committing offences linked to unlawful gambling activities in August that year.
On Jan 23, the former sergeant was charged with two counts each of criminal breach of trust as a public servant and gambling-related offences.
Police told The Straits Times on Jan 24 that officers promptly started their investigation against Amzath when they found out about his alleged unlawful acts.
He resigned from service on Sept 26, 2024.
A police spokesperson said: “(SPF officers) are expected to uphold the law and maintain the highest standards of conduct and integrity. We deal sternly with officers who break the law, including charging them in court.
“We are unable to comment further as court proceedings are ongoing.”
Court documents stated that Amzath was in Perak Road near Jalan Besar when he allegedly misappropriated $200 at around 7.45am on July 22, 2024.
He is also accused of misappropriating more than $1,700 in cash at the Rochor Neighbourhood Police Centre in Kampong Kapor Road the following month.
Separately, Amzath allegedly took part in gaming with unlicensed online gambling service providers in August 2024.
One charge was allegedly linked to a bet of more than $12,000 and the other charge allegedly involved a bet of over $17,000.
Amzath is expected to plead guilty in March.
For each count of criminal breach of trust as a public servant, an offender can be jailed for up to 20 years and fined.
Those found guilty of offences linked to unlawful gambling activities can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $10,000 for each charge.
