SHANGHAI, CHINA - The Singapore Pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai was officially launched on May 15 by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
The launch event featured a rousing drum performance, a theatrical showcase involving ballerinas in ethnically-inspired costumes and a modern dance performance choreographed to synchronise with water displays at the Pavilion.
On his tour of the Pavilion, Minister Mentor Lee experienced the visitor journey through the seven zones which were brought together under the theme 'Urban Symphony'.
Minster Mentor Lee commended the choice of the theme as one that reflected Singapore's efforts in sustainable development, as it progresses into a global city to live, work and play.
The Pavilion also showcased the harmony between contrasting elements such as that of tradition and modernity, greenery and urbanisation.
Minister Mentor Lee also added that as we celebrate 20 years of bilateral relations with China, Singapore's participation at the Shanghai World Expo will enhance our relationship by providing more opportunities to strengthen current friendships, build new ties, as well as facilitate further mutual exchanges.
"Since its early days, Singapore has had strong links with China. Today this relationship extends to all spheres - social, cultural, economic and political - and has brought mutual benefits to both countries," said Ms Aw Kah Peng, Chief Executive of Singapore Tourism Board.
"To celebrate Singapore's 20 years of bilateral relations with China, we are pleased to mark this milestone with the launch of Singapore's largest World Expo Pavilion and bring with it, an exciting line up of events, exhibitions and forums, providing Chinese residents and international visitors more opportunities to discover Singapore."
Designed to resemble a music box, the Singapore Pavilion will bring to life Singapore's dynamism and cultural-diversity.
Over the next five months, visitors to the pavilion will enjoy an interactive visitor journey, with the more popular exhibits such as 'Metro-Nome' and 'Floral Finale' standing out as must-visit zones.
To ensure the visitor experience at the pavilion remains an engaging one, exhibitions and performances will be refreshed regularly over duration of the World Expo.
