“白毛女”起源于晋察冀边区白毛仙姑的民间传说故事中的主人公“喜儿”，其因饱受旧社会，汉奸和地主的迫害而成为少白 头，顾名思义被称作“白毛女”。

喜儿逃离黄家，栖身于深山野林之中，靠山上的野果和庙里的供果维持生命。她苦苦挣扎着，相信苦 曰子总会熬到 头，等待着为父报仇、为己伸冤的那一天的到来。

三年过去了，由于生活艰苦、不见天曰，她的头发完全变白了，成了人们传说中的“白毛女".

剧本在开头描写了她的天真淳朴，接着描写她在生活中所受到的一系列打击，最后才把她的反抗性推 上了最高点。 她在逃入深山时唱道：

想要逼死我，瞎了你眼窝！
舀不干的水，扑不灭的火！
我不死，我要活！
我要报仇，我要活！

1938年春天，大春所在的八路军部队来到了杨各庄，从深山野林中救出喜儿，才使她重见天曰。“白毛仙 姑” 的真相大白后，受尽剥削压迫的贫苦农民争先恐后地揭发控诉黄世仁的罪恶，千千万万的受苦人终于报了仇，伸了冤 。
