he National Court investigates the outrage on a terrace in Murcia as a jihadist attack,” translated from “La Audiencia Nacional investiga como atentado yihadista el atropello en una terraza en Murcia,” by Fernando Lázaro, El Mundo, September 21, 2021:
A farewell letter following the radical Islamist rules, a witness who assures that the aggressor made the gesture of the uniqueness of Allah before driving into the occupants of a terrace have led to the events of last Friday in Torre Pacheco (Murcia) already being investigated in the National Court as a terrorist attack.
The driver of the vehicle, a 30-year-old Moroccan youth, also injured himself with a knife before driving over a terrace and running the car into a building.
The investigations of the Court are under summary secrecy. The alleged aggressor died as a result of the impact against the house. As a result of being run over by him, a person who was in the bar died.
The aggressor lived alone in an apartment in the same town. The agents in charge of the investigations have searched his home without finding anything remarkable.
But inside the vehicle, they did locate a letter in which the author of the attack allegedly claimed that his action was a terrorist attack and pointed out formulas used by the radicals in their texts, so they are investigating whether he was a “lone wolf.”
The vehicle he used was on loan. Initially it was thought that he was driving at high speed because there was a second vehicle chasing him, but that thesis was soon rejected by the researchers. The location of the note was essential for the local courts if they concealed its contents and sent it to the National Court. The agents in charge of the investigations are specialists in jihadism.
But more key was the testimony of a witness who saw the aggressor, before fully pressing the accelerator, make “farewell prayers,” the gesture of the uniqueness of Allah, with his hands up, before starting his alleged suicidal career.
Investigators are developing the profile of the aggressor, who initially does not seem to have a history or objective data that would point to his radicalization.
The possible use that he may have made of social networks and his access to self-radicalization pages is also being analyzed.
The State Security Forces are on high alert. In fact, they maintain level 4, almost the maximum. Fears of “lone wolves” increased after the international mission’s Afghanistan evacuation operation. Analysts understood that the Taliban triumph could “feed” the self-radicalized, the lone wolves.
This newspaper already announced that after the military operation in Kabul, security had been reinforced on more than 150 radical suspects, settled in Spain, on whom there are suspicions that at any moment they could cross the line and become potential terrorists.
