<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->DURING their marriage, Madam Siti Rohani Kusno's husband had a habit of assaulting her when he had had too much to drink.
So when the 37-year-old woman heard Mr Jalaludeen Musthafa, 36, moaning in his bedroom last Dec 24, she was too afraid to go in and check on him.
The couple, who had been married 15 years and had three children, were divorced but still living in the same apartment.
They rarely interacted and slept in separate rooms, the Coroner's Court heard yesterday.
Three days later, afraid that something was not right, she rang her niece for help. Miss Razilawaty Razif, 29, showed up with her fiance, and they found Mr Jalaludeen dead in his bed, with foam coming out of his mouth, and bloodstains around it.
For two days, Madam Siti did not see her husband but heard his voice and movements around the three-room flat they shared in Woodlands.
She knew he was alive on Dec 23 because she had heard his room door being opened and shut that night. The next morning, she was awakened by the sound of his moaning but she did not check on him as she was afraid he was drunk and would turn violent.
She suspected something was wrong later that day when she saw his shoes were still where he had left them earlier.
Madam Siti finally rang her niece on Dec 27. She unlocked the door of his room for the young woman and her fiance, but did not go inside with them.
Mr Jalaludeen was naked but there were no visible injuries on his body.
State Coroner Victor Yeo yesterday returned an open verdict. There were no family members present at the hearing. It was the second time in a week that the court had heard such a case. Last Friday, Mr Aw Hui Boon, 62, discovered his wife, Madam Liew Shak Hiong, 57, was dead only after her decomposed body began to smell.
