SINGAPORE : The owner of a restaurant in Singapore has reeled in a man-sized Queensland garoupa off the coast of Sabah. And he expects to feed 600 customers with it.

The garoupa weighs 150 kilogrammes and is two metres long. It is so big that it had to be brought in on Monday morning using a forklift.

It took nine fishermen one hour to capture the underwater gladiator, which is now waiting to be prepared by chefs at the restaurant.

There are many ways to cook this S$3,000 purchase - most of it will be steamed, while some parts will be stewed.

Johnny Tan, owner, 2nd Kitchen Restaurant, said: "We'll split its body into 12 parts, all of which will be prepared differently. They'll taste different too. The best part of this fish is the throat."

It could be hard to swallow, but every 200-gramme serving will be sold at S$20. That could amount to a S$15,000 profit for the restaurant!

Over a hundred customers have made reservations for a share of this deep sea wonder.

1. The meat from such a big fish is probably pretty tough and tasteless.
2. Garoupa is a very common fish in markets and restauranrs
3. Customers will only be eating part of the fish and not the whole fish

So what's the novelty?

When I saw the picture, I thought that she was going to give the fish a massage.

When I saw the picture, I thought that she was going to give the fish a massage.

She seems to be putting something on the fish and saying her last goodbye.

My mother used to say that such giant fish should not be eaten and should be release back into the ocean since they are somthing like a demi god. The meat won't taste good anyway so there is no point eating it.

just imagine the amount of toxins that accumulated in the fish after all these years. Seriously should not eat it at all.

people want to eat, let them eat lah. Just don't caught off guard and lao sai !!!:D:D

Just make sure they are eating garoupa and not orchard sea dragon !

it takes 100 years for this fish to grow to this size and just 2 hours to finish it in stamach.

really sad

Why not buy a Cow and cook it instead?
Same size and also an animal
Drown the cow and you can get beef soup.

bro
this is not your average grouper. In fact its a Gao Tun or a Queensland Grouper. This fish can only be caught at depths of over 100m. The meat is simply superb. Had a friend who caught a 72kg beauty at South China Seas off Kuching.
We had parts of it steam with garlic, cooked in tomyam & stir fried with seasonal veggies. This "grouper" is probably the best besides Napolean Wrasse.

I was wondering how he would be be making $15,000 profit.
fish weighs 150,000gm(150kg)
per serving 200gm sells $20.00
150,000gms gives 750serving which would rake in $15,000only.
He has to pay the staff to slaughter the fish, prepare and cook the fish.
The waiter and waitress to serve the fish and also the exorbitant rental.
He got to pay himself a salary for been so smart for buying the fish.
And lastly he got to pay $3,000 to the fisherman too. If business is so straight forward, I think all of us will be businessmen.

There are lots of Rich sinkies around willing to pay for experience so can Hao Lian with friends.
