If you do realize by now, the state-controlled PAP mouthpiece has been sprouting spin after spin of late on how the government is helping ordinary Singaporeans cope with the recession:
1. Northeast CDC raises economic assistance from S$1.4m to S$3m
2. NTUC pledges more help
3. FairPrice extends discounts to customers till December
4. MOH to recruit 4,500 more
Chua Mui Hoong, Senior writer of The Straits Times wrote a syncophantic piece titled ’Solidarity, Spore Inc-style‘ lauding the PAP’s unique system in fostering “solidarity” with the works during a recession.
The message sent across to Singaporeans is unmistakable: only the government has the ability and prowess to “help” Singaporeans in such troubling times.
It is an irony that the PAP which has long harped on the importance of “self reliance” among citizens and eshewing “welfare” as a form of “clutches” is the prime culprit in perpetuating a ’serf mentality’ in the population.
As jobless Singaporeans become more and more dependent on the government for jobs, aid and handouts, they will naturally be grateful to them and throw their support behind them in an election thereby entrenching the PAP’s political hegemony.
