LONDON - Wayne Rooney images will be taken off the soft drink cans and bottles after relevations of his relationship with a prostitute was made public last month.
Coca-cola said in a statement Monday and quoted in Sydney Morning Herald: "Last month we amended our marketing plans on Coke Zero. Given the situation at that time we did not feel it was appropriate to run an on-pack promotion featuring Wayne Rooney."
The announcement was made following newspaper allegations that the 24-year-old football star started meeting prostitute Jenny Thompson, 21, last year July while his wife Coleen was pregnant with their son, Kai.
The Daily Mail in the UK reported that the American company decision was also due to concern that negative stories of his private life did not tie in well with Coca-cola's wholesome family image.
It was widely reported that Rooney's contract with the giant soft drink corporation, which started since 2007, is worth up to £500,000 (RM2.45mil) a year.
Rooney has accompanied Coleen to Prague for a work trip while he takes three weeks off football due to injury, the daily reported.
