Anti-Mafia raids under way in Italy

ROME – Italian police say they are carrying out scores of arrests in Palermo and other cities in Sicily in a large anti-Mafia operation.
The Carabinieri police in Palermo said that over 90 suspects were arrested in raids early Tuesday.
They say in a statement that the arrests targeted the bosses of local families and other mobsters intent on setting up a ruling commission that would set Cosa Nostra's strategy.
The statement says top boss Matteo Messina Denaro was behind the plan.
Messina Denaro is among a few bosses who have been competing for control of the Sicilian Mafia since the 2006 arrest of Bernardo Provenzano. He remains at large.
The operation Tuesday involved some 1,200 police officers, according to the statement.
