New Delhi, Nov 29: India and Singapore on Wednesday entered into an agreement which would allow Indian warships to dock at Singapore’s Changi naval base. The pact will allow Indian ships sailing in the disputed South China Sea to refuel and rearm, if need be, at Singapore’s newest naval base. The move is aimed at countering Chinese naval presence in South East Asia and the Indian Ocean region.
It is reported that from now on, the Indian Navy will be able to directly contact the Singaporean authorities when it needs to use Singapore’s naval facilities. Earlier, the Navy had to process its request through Defence Ministry to External Affairs Ministry to the Singapore government– a tedious and time consuming process.
Singapore’s Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen said that in return of Singapore’s favour, the Indian Navy will provide logistical support to Singaporean vessels when they are in Indian waters.
China has intensified its activity in the Indian Ocean in the last five years. It has also deployed nuclear-powered attack submarines, which is a major cause of concern for India. India will be able to keep better watch on Chinese activity with the accessibility of the Changi base.
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her Singaporean counterpart issued a joint statement after their meeting in the national capital.
“The 2nd Defence Ministers’ Dialogue between India and Singapore was successfully concluded today. It was inaugurated after both countries signed the revised Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) in 2015 to further strengthen the longstanding defence relationship between the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Indian Armed Forces,” the statement read.
“Of particular significance during this meeting was the conclusion of the India-Singapore Bilateral Agreement for Navy Cooperation, which will lead to increased cooperation in maritime security, joint exercises, temporary deployments from each other’s naval facilities and mutual logistics support. Both Ministers looked forward to the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise next year,” it added.
