SMRT's train frequency to be reduced if flu alert hits red

SINGAPORE: SMRT said train frequency will be reduced by 30 per cent once Singapore's pandemic alert level hits red. This is because its service staff are divided into two teams to prevent the potential spread of the H1N1 virus.

SMRT has increased its cleanliness vigilance level in trains and buses by more than three times ever since the Health Ministry raised the flu alert to orange.

Public areas are cleaned once every two hours and temperatures of SMRT officers are checked twice daily. There is also a quarantine room for passengers who display flu symptoms.

Ventilation within the trains has been increased, while windows and doors of buses parked at interchanges will remain open.

Temperature of bus captains are also being checked at bus interchanges.

I read that they are taking temperatures for the drivers... but what's the point ??
What is the point of checking the temperature of drivers, but not checking the temperatures of passengers ??
There is few hundreds-to-1 driver on each bus route.

It goes against all sensibilties or common senses.

Basically, for whatever reasons, there does not seem to be
enough staff to handle the emergency and run the trains at
normal frequency, and the solution is to lower the frequency.

Either they staff up or we should renationalise the SMRT, back into a public utility instead of being a corporation.

There are public goods, which are not best served by being provided by profit seeking organisations. This should be run as a public service rather than a private corporation.

You are right in a way... if cut down frequency due to decrease of passengers, still make some sense.

but KNN... the SMRT management says they cut down the frequency is because lack of staff, as they divide into Team A and B... KNN... why not Team A, B, and C ??

I have to wait for 20-30 minutes every morning for bus now, cant imagine what will happen if decrease somenore

When you cut down on the frequency of MRT trains, the trains would be more crowded. When trains are crowded, spreading of any type of disease is easier and tracing is harder.

Singapore MRT Trains, Buses and other means of Public Transport are now packed with foreigners all over the world! Who can leave Singapore at any time.

By reducing the frequency of trains, Singapore MRT should get an award for spreading this and any disease! worldwide!

SG is the richest country in the region or SEA, 2nd richest country in asia.

Also SG has a majority pop of 75% chinese whom made the country what it is today. If the % were changed say more malays would SG be better or worse?

Why reduce freguency of trains just because SMRT only has 2 teams? Must be some kind of WARPED logic processes in the brain of some govt 'scholar' narrowly focussed on profit margins alone.

In a recession, it should be easier to hire more workers to create more teams to clean the trains and stations without having the need to reduce the frequency of trains.

In fact, a distance separation of 6 feet between individuals is recommended to prevent the spread of any type of airborne disease. This can only be achieved by having a higher frequency of trains arriving to clear the crowds.

An alternative would be for every passenger to put on face masks when riding trains or buses.
