SMRT takes action against sleeping bus driver
Posted: 25 October 2011 1933 hrs
SINGAPORE: SMRT is taking disciplinary action against a 58-year-old bus driver who was unwell on the job and allegedly dozed off at the wheel.
This was after the transport operator received complaints from 20 passengers who rode on SMRT bus number 857 from Boon Keng Road to Yio Chu Kang Monday night.
"The bus was very shaky and swung drastically... Someone in the front shouted 'the driver is sleeping!'," said a passenger.
"Everybody shouted at him before he stopped. But when we tried to alight, he refused."
All passengers eventually alighted at a bus-stop along Yio Chu Kang after the four-minute ordeal.
Some even claimed that the swinging motion of the two-carriage bus caused hurt to some passengers.
SMRT said that the bus driver had made an incorrect judgment and continued to drive, instead of reporting to the bus operations control centre.
It added that the driver should have pulled the bus over immediately in a safe manner, and let passengers continue their journey on another arranged bus.
