TRAIN operator SMRT is investigating a complaint about a carriage door opening while a train was travelling along the Bukit Panjang LRT line. It is the second reported incident of SMRT's train doors opening while travelling between stations in the last month.
Passenger Esther Lim said one of the doors on the right side of the train suddenly slid open as it was nearing Keat Hong station on Tuesday at about 6.30pm.
'I was facing the other side, and suddenly I wondered, how come there's a cool breeze, so I turned around and saw the door was completely open,' said the 32-year-old engineer, who was standing in the middle of the carriage at the time.
The door remained open for about 30 seconds as the train continued moving till it stopped along the tracks, said Ms Lim. She said no one was leaning against the door when it opened, but said shocked passengers near the door grabbed hold of railings or handles for fear of falling out in case the train jerked.
A train announcement was made shortly after to inform passengers of a delay in services due to a technical fault, said Ms Lim.
She estimated that it took 15 minutes for a staff member to come on board the train and close the door from the inside. The train then resumed operations.
In a statement yesterday, an SMRT spokesman said it has contacted Ms Lim to obtain more details for a thorough investigation.
'The train has been withdrawn from service and we are currently performing checks,' the spokesman said, adding that all LRT trains are equipped with fail-safe features to ensure passenger safety. For example, a system ensures that trains will not be able to move off if the train doors are not properly closed.
Last month, a passenger on board one of the new Circle Line trains said that a carriage door opened while it was heading from the Paya Lebar station to Bishan, creating a gap of about 30cm.
SMRT investigated the incident and, after conducting tests on the train, said it found nothing wrong with the door mechanism.
It added that all Circle Line trains have a built-in feature which allows a door to open up to 5cm when someone exerts force against it, creating a maximum gap of 10cm if both doors are prised open.
