Six nabbed as cops bust illegal 4-D ring

KULAIJAYA: Police detained six people, including four women, linked to an illegal four-digit betting syndicate that raked in more than RM96mil this year alone. The six — aged between 17 to 49 — were picked up in raids at two houses in Taman Sungai Emas and Taman Indahpura here at 6.45pm on Saturday.

Police had placed the houses under surveillance since receiving a tip-off three weeks ago. Supt Maszely Minhad, the operations chief of Bukit Aman’s anti-vice unit, said investigations revealed that the syndicate raked in more than RM8mil a month since it started operations more than a year ago.

“They collected about RM400,000 from their agents in Johor and about S$60,000 (RM143,796) from Singapore,” he told reporters. During the raid, the six — believed to be workers — were busy accepting bets through fax machines and short messaging service.

The houses, rented by the syndicate, were used to receive bets every Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from their agents, as it is a special draw day by four-digit betting companies. The houses were used as counting centres. Police seized 14 fax machines, two laptops, six mobile phones, six scanners, betting sheets, and stationery.

Supt Maszely said police have been able to identify the head of the syndicate. The six suspects are being investigated under Section 4A (a) of the Open Gambling House. If charged and convicted, they could be slapped with a fine between RM20,000 and RM200,000 and up to five years’ jail.
