SINGAPORE : Counterfeit apparel and sportswear worth S$1.08 million were seized in an 18-hour operation conducted by the police from Monday till early Tuesday.

Police have also arrested three men and three women for peddling counterfeit apparel and sportswear goods. The six are believed to be part of two major local syndicates involved in dealing in such counterfeit goods. The operation targeted four makeshift trade fair stalls and a store within the Bedok area.

Items seized included over 40,000 items of clothing, consisting of soccer jerseys bearing the trade marks of popular football clubs and children's apparel printed with popular cartoon characters. Investigations are still ongoing.

Persons found in possession of infringing goods for the purposes of trade or manufacture, in which a registered trade mark is falsely applied may be fined up to S$10,000 per article - up to a maximum S$100,000 for all items - or imprisoned for up to 5 years or both. - CNA/ms
