<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to Monday's Forum Online letter by Mr Ernest Seah, 'SingTel should make clear the risk of hefty bills for data services'.
We thank Mr Seah for his feedback and have contacted him to explain the charging scheme of SingTel's Broadband on Mobile service.
SingTel's Broadband on Mobile service is a high-speed data service using HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) or 3.5G. Download speeds are dependent onseveral factors like mobile network coverage, type of device/equipment used, network traffic at the time ofaccess and type of data application used. The service is meant to access the Internet and e-mail while on the move.
We have a range of plans to suit customers' mobile surfing needs. We offer two schemes for data services: one on a monthly subscription basis while the other is pay per use.
We introduced the youth plan recently with a monthly subscription of $29, which comes with 50GB of free data. The plan is designed to meet customers who are often on the move and need to access the Internet. Those under 18 years old will need a guarantor when signing up for the plan. The guarantor can either be a parent or legal guardian of the youth and needs to be a Singaporean above 21 years old. Customers between 18 and 21 can sign for any services without a guarantor.
Excess data is charged in blocks of 2KB as data is accumulated in 2KB blocks, subject to a minimum charge of 0.5 cents per session. This provides a more accurate representation on a customer's bill instead of being charged in MB/GB blocks. This is consistent with industry practice.
We have observed that 50GB of bundled data is sufficient to meet customers' mobile surfing needs. In general, 50GB of data can be used to retrieve more than one million e-mail messages a month or 150,000 webpages, or 5,000 videos. (The calculation is based on an estimated average file size of 50KB per text-based e-mail, 300KB per webpage and 10MB per video.) This usage information is also clearly indicated in all our marketing collaterals.
To alert customers that they are approaching the 50GB usage quota, we send two SMS alerts to inform customers when they reach the 25GB and 45GB quotas. Customers can also click on our online data usage record tool any time for an accurate check of how much data they have used.
We are continuously reviewing our services to ensure they meet our customers' changing demands and will take Mr Seah's feedback into consideration.
