SINGAPORE - Antiviral drug remdesivir can now be used to treat seriously ill Covid-19 patients in Singapore, making the country one of the first to get the nod for using the drug to treat the virus.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has granted conditional approval for Gilead Sciences' remdesivir, allowing infectious diseases specialists to administer the drug to some patients, the authority said on Wednesday (June 10), The Straits Times has learnt.

Remdesivir is the only treatment so far shown to benefit Covid-19 patients in a robust clinical trial.

As part of the conditional approval, Gilead is required to collect the relevant safety data and to monitor the use of the drug. The approval was obtained in less than three weeks - Gilead filed for registration of remdesivir in Singapore on May 22.

Patients the drug can be administered to include those with low oxygen saturation levels less than or equal to 94 per cent, or who might require supplemental oxygen or more intensive breathing support such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation - a type of life support, or invasive mechanical ventilation, HSA said.

The approval is based on clinical data from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the United States' global phase three trial and another by Gilead, the drugmaker said in a statement on Wednesday.

Singapore participated in both trials and enrolled about 100 patients.

HSA is working with Singapore's Health Ministry and relevant experts to further define the subcategory of patients who are likely to benefit most from this medicine, it said.

Singapore enrolled its first patient in these trials on March 12. Remdesivir was previously available only through such clinical trials.

It is not vaccine. It is anti-viral treatment
and only for serious icu cases. it has been approved over 6.9 weeks ago for use as an emergency drug in “standard care” treatment or therapeutic in u.s. icu’s by the cdc and dr. fauci after extensive trials in several hospitals. this means every u.s. hospital treating ccp virus patients has the iv packs on standby in the icu just in case patient doesn’t respond well to a ventilator. for sg to claim that she is “one of the 1st” in the world to approve it is way beyond misleading, disingenuous, and untrue. many cuntries have already started using it after the u.s. approved it for icu use as a national standard. in fact prc is first to use it in wuhan, but discredited it as inconclusive yet stole the formula and filed a patent within prc for “national security” and “strategic” medical use. the reality is that it worked in wuhan, helped discharged thousands of acute patients in icu, emptied their hospitals, and now claim they are virus-free.

Alamak, steal business from Ho Ching's (joint venture with Ah Tiong) vaccine business, how can?

Remdesivir is used for Ebola.
Some used Remdesivir as base for cocktail drug for covid

according to data from santa clara, it’s effective over 90% of the time which means there will still be some deaths. saving 9 out of 10 patients in icu is a big deal. that’s why icu case loads in ny and nj have plummeted, allowing states to loosen lockdowns. as i’ve said many times before, it’s a game changer if er’s and icu’s are no longer swarmed with acute cases.

can wait for some time or never. right now without vaccine the most important metric is to de-stress and unload the er’s and icu’s in order for them to arrive at normalcy so that hospitals are not overworked. with that metric achieved can now look forward and patiently wait for an effective vaccine for majority of population who have not been infected yet. imo, getting a mild infection and building one’s immunity against it is the best for all, as vaccines may or may not work depending on virus mutating as it adapts to various human bodies. not every human body (and immune response) is the same when it deals with this virus.
