Australian-American woman to become first Singapore-born to travel into space
Media company Chicago Star founder Elaine Chia Hyde was born in Singapore and grew up in Australia.Come Feb 25, the entrepreneur, physicist and pilot will join five others on Blue Origin's 10th human flight, which will take off at 9.30am (local time) from Van Horn in Texas.
According to Chicago Star, Mrs Hyde was first captivated by the idea of space exploration when she was 10 years old.
She attended Space Camp when she was 16.
At the University of Melbourne, she studied business and physics.
She later moved to the US and now lives in Florida with her husband, also a physicist, and their five children.
"I never stopped talking about my ambition," Chicago Star quoted Mrs Hyde as saying.
"Even when I was in offices wearing business suits or hitting the pavement delivering papers, it felt so far-fetched then, but I told myself I would do it one day, and it kept the dream alive."
Her journey will be broadcast live on Blue Origin's YouTube channel and Blue Origin's website.
On Aug 29 last year, the Singapore flag was carried into outer space by entrepreneur Nicolina Elrick, who has been calling Lion City home since 1995.
Ms Elrick travelled into space on a Blue Origin flight.
