SingTel launches initiative to benefit seniors with iPhones

FOR the first time in her life, Madam Koo Kar Kee will own a mobile phone.
The 84-year-old is one of the beneficiaries of SingTel's Project Silverline, which aims to distribute donated iPhones to the needy elderly.
The beneficiaries are those under the care of voluntary welfare organisations Lions Befrienders and Willing Hearts.
From Oct 11, the public can donate their used iPhones at any SingTel retail outlet. All personal data, messages and contacts will be wiped off from the phones before they are passed on.
The phones will then be refitted with apps designed and developed by SingTel, in partnership with sustainable business innovation company Newton Circus and direct marketing and digital agency OgilvyOne.

SingTel launches new social responsibility initiative for seniors.
SINGAPORE: Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) announced the launching of Project Silverline, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative on Wednesday that “aims to enhance the lives of seniors through digital communications and multimedia technology.”
The project will run from now until March 2013, and seniors under the care of Lions Befrienders and Willing Hearts will receive refurbished iPhones donated by SingTel customers.
SingTel said it will sponsor the talk time and data usage for one year.
The iPhones will be installed with a suite of five applications that is specially designed by SingTel in collaboration with Newton Circus and Ogilvy One to help seniors to take care of their health, discover new experiences every day, and stay connected with caregivers and loved ones.
“The applications are available with English and Mandarin language options,” the telecom operator said. “Well-Being application helps seniors to stay healthy by reminding them to take their daily medication. It also shares important health tips and exercise videos to encourage a healthy lifestyle and positive outlook.
“The application uses the phone’s accelerometer to detect when the user has had a fall and notifies caregivers via e-mail,” it said.
Discover application allows seniors to take photographs and share them with friends. It allows them to attach notes and location information to the shots. Seniors can use Emergency application to call for the police or an ambulance by clicking on emergency services icons. With the application, seniors with poor eyesight and memory do not have to worry about which numbers to dial.
“With connect application, seniors can identify their friends and family on their phone contact list through the use of images and fonts. Seniors can look forward to receiving inspiring quotes, videos and photos every day with inspire application.
“This application helps to keep them abreast of current affairs and improves their general knowledge,” SingTel said in announcing the initiative.
