April container throughput in the port of Singapore dropped both month-on-month and year-on-year, according to figures released by the local port authority.

April throughput fell to 2.09 million TEUs, down from 2.19 million TEUs in March and 2.53 million TEUs in April 2008, figures from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) showed.

The volume slip came after throughput surged 18.4% in March from 1.85 million TEUs in February.

Dominant port operator PSA's Singapore terminals moved 2.03 million TEUs last month, down from 2.14 million in March. Year-on-year, volumes were also down 17.5% compared to 2.46 million TEUs in the same period last year.

For the first four months this year, PSA recorded throughput of 7.89 million TEUs, down 17.6% from 9.58 million TEUs handled in the corresponding period last year.

Smaller operator Jurong Port saw steady volumes handled at 56,000 TEUs in April. Year-on-year, however, throughput plunged by 32.5% from 83,000 TEUs handled in April 2008.
