MANILA, Philippines(AP) — The Philippine <span3432251>militaryhttp://philippinestoday.blogspot.com/</span3432251> says it has killed three most-wanted leaders of the al-Qaida-linked terrorist groups Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah in the southern Philippines.</span>

Military spokesman Col. Marcelo Burgos says a military operation early Thursday on Jolo Island killed Abu Sayyaf leader Umbra Jumdail, Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan, and Singaporean Abdullah Ali, who uses the guerrilla name Muawiyah.

The Malaysian and Singaporean are considered top leaders of the regional terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah. Marwan carried a $5 million reward for his killing or capture and Muawiyah $50,000, both put up by the U.S. government.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - A Singaporean terrorist known as Abdullah Ali, who uses the guerrilla name Muawiyah, was among the three killed by the Philippine military at dawn on Thursday, in one of the most significant successes against militants on their southern island stronghold.

The military also said it killed two other most-wanted leaders of the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah. They included Abu Sayyaf leader Umbra Jumdail, a Filipino and Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan.

Muawiyah carried a US$500,000 (S$627,000) reward for his killing or capture while his counterpart, Marwan, considered a top leader of the regional terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah, carried a US$5 million reward which was both put up by the United States (US) government.

Military spokesman Colonel Marcelo Burgos said the military carried out the attack early on Thursday morning in Parang town on Jolo Island, the stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf and their allies from the Indonesian-based terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah.

The Philippine military said on Friday it had not been able to obtain proof that it killed Singaporean Mohammad Ali, alias Muawiyah, one of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leaders who had been hiding in the Philippines since the group killed 202 people in a series of bomb attacks on the Indonesian island of Bali in 2002, but insisted the Muawiyah, and the other two had died in a United States (US)-backed airstrike. -- PHOTO: REUTERS

MANILA (AFP) - The Philippine military said on Friday it had not been able to obtain proof that it killed Singaporean Mohammad Ali, alias Muawiyah, one of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leaders who had been hiding in the Philippines since the group killed 202 people in a series of bomb attacks on the Indonesian island of Bali in 2002, but insisted the Muawiyah, and the other two had died in a United States (US)-backed airstrike.

Troops were sent to the isolated jungle area where Thursday's bombing took place on the remote southern island of Jolo, but they found no bodies, armed forces spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Arnulfo Burgos told reporters in Manila.

Lt-Col Burgos said the other two senior leaders from the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf and JI networks, as well as 12 slain junior figures, had been taken away by fellow militants and quickly buried as per Muslim custom.

'After the airstrike, the bodies were taken immediately,' Lt-Col Burgos said.
