"The path towards being a COVID resilient nation is going to be a long and hard slog. Even with very high vaccination rates, we are not going to reach herd immunity, where the outbreak just fizzles out," Wong warned during a virtual multi-ministry taskforce conference.

Instead, Singapore must be mentally prepared that cases will rise as the country resumes activities and reopen its economy in a controlled manner – "we are feeling the stones as we cross the river”, he added.

'Covid resilient' a.k.a 'endemic' is a euphemism that things will not be returning to normal. The 'new normal' they are selling you is not normal, and it is also not new.

So much for the experts who said 70+% population fully vaccinated = herd immunity.

The way to gain herd immunity is to allow the infection to spread naturally while maintaining just the right degree of control to prevent ICU capacity from being overwhelmed. This was the "flatten the curve" strategy that many Western nations initially signed up to but then abandoned because they got cold feet and put politics ahead of common sense and science.

Sweden adopted this strategy with great success as can be seen from the outcome. Other countries attempted the ridiculous "elimination" plan and the end result is the shambles we see today.

Deaths in Sweden are pretty much zero despite 99% prevalence of the delta variant.

Even dumber are countries like NZ and OZ who still think that they can eliminate the virus. I'm now stuck in a lockdown with no end in sight while the rest of the world is already moving on from Covid and is going back to normal.
