Teacher pleads guilty to forgery

A teacher who made amendments to her student's Primary School Leaving Examination or PSLE Tamil language answer scripts pleaded guilty to her offences in a district court today.

Forty year old Shanti Krishnasamy who's a Tamil language teacher at Canberra Primary School tampered with the papers on 5th October 2007.

She pleaded guilty to three forgery charges and five other similar ones were taken into consideration.

The Deputy Public Prosecutor, Ramu Miyapan told District Judge May Mesenas that Shanti invigilated a class during the Tamil Language Papers 1 and 2 examinations that year.

The school's Internal Presiding Examiner, Ng Guan Chye had told his staff before the papers started that they weren't allowed to invigilate classes where their own students were taking their examinations.

Shanti realised that four of her students were in the class she was supposed to invigilate that day.

However, instead of notifying Mr Ng about it, she continued to invigilate the class even though she knew she wasn't supposed to do so.

Shanti committed her first offence shortly after the Tamil Language Paper 1 examination ended that day.

When the classroom cleared, she looked through an answer script of one of the students was spotted several mistakes in it.

Shanti then amended them with a blue ballpoint pen.

The court heard, she made 17 spelling corrections to the answer script in all.

Shanti then submitted the paper with the other answer scripts to Mr Ng.

She also tampered with the same student's answer script when the Tamil Language Paper 2 examination ended later that day.

This time, she went to a restroom to make the changes.

Shanti corrected a total of 17 mistakes to the student's Paper 2 answer scripts.

Her offences were discovered during a marking exercise later that year.

The markers noted that the amendments to the child's papers were done in an adult's handwriting.

Shanti said, she committed forgery as she wanted to help her Tamil students get good grades.

At the same time, she claimed, she wanted to help her school obtain a good reputation.

The case was adjourned to 22nd April.

If convicted of forgery, for each charge, Shanti could be jailed up to seven years and fined.
