Singapore’s newly developed robot cockroaches have been used for the first time in Myanmar earthquake relief, according to a report in Singapore’s Straits Times.
The 10 Cyborg cockroaches arrived in Myanmar on 30 March with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
The Cyborg cockroaches were developed by the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) in collaboration with Klass Engineering and Solutions, Nanyang Technological University.
This is the first time in the world that Cyborg cockroaches have been used for humanitarian work. Cyborg cockroach is a robot that mimics the capabilities of a regular cockroach and combines it with electronics.
It was first used in Myanmar on 31 March after the earthquake and was tested twice in Nay Pyi Taw on 3 April. So far, the cockroach has not been able to find survivors under the rubble of collapsed buildings, but it has helped rescue teams in some of the worst-hit areas work more easily on the ground. – Htun Htun/ZN
