Singapore stops chicken man staging anti-KFC protest

A US animal-rights activist said he was prevented by police Thursday from staging a one-man protest in a chicken suit at a KFC outlet in Singapore.

Edward Basse, a Manila-based campaigner for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), said he was whisked away in a police car after he arrived by taxi outside the restaurant in a working-class district.

"I am now in my hotel room. I am under functional house arrest. I will stay in my hotel room under police surveillance until I leave tomorrow," 24-year-old Basse told AFP by telephone.

Police in Singapore, which has some of the world's toughest restrictions on protests, had no immediate comment.

"It took a long time, the questioning, perhaps a couple of hours. I was scared, but that is what I have to do for the chickens," Basse said.

"They consficated my bags and the chicken costume, as well as the poster," he added, saying he did not expect to be charged and would leave Singapore voluntarily.

In Singapore, protests are only allowed at a designated public park located on the fringe of the business district. Otherwise, any public demonstration or march needs a police permit.

"I was scared but they treated me fairly okay," Basse said of his stay with the police.

"I am here now in my room safe, but what I went through is nothing compared to (the treatment of) the chickens."

Jason Baker, PETA's regional director based in Hong Kong, said Basse was a vegetarian outraged by KFC's allegedly cruel practices against chickens.

"He made a decision that a voice needs to be given to the animals that KFC abuses," said Baker.

KFC always been target? Why only KFC ?
There are other meat like Cow/duck/pig...

I would respect him more if he had not taken a taxi to the KFC outlet and if he had explained why he decided to protest in SG instead of in Manila or in the south of Phillipines or in a ghetto in the USA.

Maybe he browsed this forum a couple of times and from the feedback you guys gave got leery of the world-class transport system here?

Basse was a vegetarian

It's good that he is one. I like that. But well, Basse and PETA, you must understand that the real movement starts more from the self than from others, that if people became vegetarians most of these meat joints would cease to exist.

But most useless people out there as we know can't live even a day without meat, and so animal slaughtering, processing and sales outlets that are involved in possible animal cruelty will remain.

True care for these animals as we know, is to stop eating them.

So much for "change" and "making the world a better place" when so many self-serving hypocritical idiots out there form the majority base in this world. Pffftttt.

Well said. There's no such thing as kindly slaughtering an animal or kindly eating meat. All are cruel. Imagine how to kindly slaughter an animal? Imagine how to kindly cook its meat? Fry it kindly, steam it kindly, boil it kindly, roast it kindly etc.? Not cruel? Be cruel kindly? When it's done, slice it or cube it kindly. Savor and chew it kindly, with chilli or ketchup?

A real dingbat. Manila is the heart of high end paedophilia for nearly 30 years. The founder of DHL had girls staying in his apartment that did not even cross 10 years old. He also fathered couple of kids. And this idiot came all the way to Singapore to stand in front of KFC.

No commonsense, no brains and no sense of proportion.

This is what we are not used to in Singapore, ang moh annoying and disturbing the peace of the country. Singaporeans worry about their daily food- in-the- mouth more than protesting against a few chicken slaughthers.

Ang Moh must get fuck-off from Asia and go back their their own motherland and ripped off their own people and screw up their own country under the name of democracy.

No peace no prosperity. Propesperty only comes when country is at peace with most things. Protest only agitate peace and cause trouble and destroy life.

Ang Moh fuck off from Asia. They have learnt very well from their forefathers who have had rip off Asians when in Asia. They have said Asians will kill the whole family if you rip them off in businesses.

Asian will kill your whole family if you try to rip them off, so ang mohs better behave well and do an honest business when you are in Asia.

animal rights in asia is a joke. With slavery and prostitution still rampant here, fight for human rights first.

If this chicken man escape, would they say that the man disguise himself as a chicken, squeeze into a chicken coop and sneak out of SIngapore?

the angmo is not protesting the way the chicken were kill, more for the way the chicken were rear. It a inhuman way as the chicken were packed up to 17 birds per square metre. (regulation approved) The birds were keep in a enclosed building that were lighted up to 23.5hrs per day to simulated the chicken to eat non stop so as fatten them. the time taken from chick to the supermarket is just 39days.
during my kampong days, chicken were rear till about 60 odds days b4 being makan by family.
