Quote: "I can tell you that the Schoolings have been going through one of the most difficult and emotional times. His father was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Joseph has not only had the weight of the world on his shoulders, but he has also been going through tough times in his personal life. He is never one to make excuses though."
Playing the sympathy card!
When Schooling's father was diagnosed with cancer, should Schooling drop out or continue with participation in the Tokyo Olympics?
If drop-out, Schooling will have everyone's sympathy.
If Schooling decided to continue, it means many things:
Father's condition was not serious (yet).
The family wants him to continue.
Schooling assessed that his mental state allows him to continue.
Schooling decides to continue.
Well, if you decide to continue, do not use cancer as an excuse.
To Schooling's credit, he did not mention it; only this Chatri chap mentioned it.
So Schooling should be assessed solely on his swim performance.
To finish within a respectable time - acceptable and the whole country will sympathise with Schooling.
But, to finish a few seconds outside your Olympic record and qualifying time - have to be prepared for the criticisms.
All sportsmen and celebrities face criticisms, why can't Schooling?
