After returning home from a medical surgery, she was resting on a sofa when her husband came back and hit her on her forehead.
On a separate occasion, the man, Kannan Balakrishnan, 49, threw a remote control at his 42-year-old wife’s face, breaking her tooth.
Kannan was jailed for a year on Wednesday (26 September) after pleading guilty to eight charges, including causing hurt, criminal intimidation and breaching a personal protection order. Other similar charges were taken into consideration for his sentencing.
The court heard that Kannan had physically abused his wife on nine occasions in their Tampines flat from 2016 till he was arrested in 2018. The wife has since filed for divorce. The couple have a son and a daughter.
On 13 May 2016, while his wife was sleeping, Kannan woke her up to ask for food. The wife, who observed that Kannan was drunk, did as she was told.
Kannan then tried to turn on the television but failed. He then asked his wife if she had paid the television bills before flinging the remote control at her face. She lost half of an upper tooth as a result of the impact.
On 28 January last year, Kannan returned home after drinking. He hurled profanities at his wife. A while later, he grabbed the wife’s left hand and punched her face. When she sought medical treatment later that day, she was diagnosed with a possible fracture on her left cheekbone.
On 7 October last year, the wife saw Kannan sleeping on the floor in the living room. She asked him to sleep in their son’s room. Kannan hurled vulgarities at her. He later picked up a protractor and threw it at the wife’s face, causing a small cut on her chin.
On 1 June this year, the wife was resting on the sofa after returning from a surgery when her husband came home. He hit her forehead forcefully, causing her head to knock on the sofa’s armrest.
The next month, while intoxicated, Kannan smashed one of the glass panels on a wooden table and threatened his wife with a glass shard.
He told her “I want to kill you”. His son called the police after hearing the commotion.
Asking for 10 to 11 months’ jail, Kannan’s pro bono lawyer R Gupta said his client was “put off” by his wife’s nagging.
Kannan, who worked as an operational executive, was handing his monthly salary of $1,500 a month to his wife. But his wife had asked him to work two to five jobs a day so that she could get more money from him.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Shin Hui sought at least 12 months’ jail. Kannan subjected his wife to “sustained harassment and hurt” and “put her in fear of her life”, said the prosecution.
