Fewer ITE, poly grads in full-time work due to changing employment trends: MOE

SINGAPORE: Fewer polytechnic and ITE graduates are employed full-time compared to 10 years ago, due to a shift in the choice of employment among these graduates.

Senior Minister of State for Education Janil Puthucheary said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6), in response to a question from Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Leon Perera.

Dr Puthucheary said the Ministry of Education (MOE) surveys employment rates of polytechnic and ITE graduates every year, six months after they complete their final examinations.

The number of polytechnic and ITE graduates in full-time permanent employment fell from 77 per cent in 2007 to 58 per cent in 2016, a decline of 19 percentage points.

In contrast, the number of graduates who choose to go into freelance, part-time and temporary work has gone up, he said. Elaborating on the figures, Dr Janil said: “About half of the decrease is due to students choosing to do part-time work while they prepare for further studies”.

He cited MOE figures showing that the number of ITE and polytechnic graduates choosing to further their studies has gone up by 10 percentage points “over the last 10 years”.

The other half of the decrease is due to graduates choosing not to engage in full-time permanent work.

“They could be doing freelance work, or have other reasons to lead them to choose to work part-time or take up temporary employment,” Dr Puthucheary said.

my uncle say this indian chief has no clue of what's happening. he say refer to self inflicted sinkie loser thread on tam chia ter nao parents borrowing money to let their prince and princess to study useless pte uni and borrow money for their overseas holiday hidden as a exchange program and caused their prince and princess to be lazy ter nao gia to avoid working.

The hard truth is, the Full Time Permanent Work all these ITE Poly Graduates have been studying for, had already been taken by his fellow CECA Indian Snakes.

SG53 LEEgime painted rosy economic and career pictures all the time. Schools parents etc got high false expectations, and unwilling to accept the actual reality.

Youth rather don't have jobs, than to have poor jobs, because they refused to DOWNGRADE THEMSELVES. To be looked down by friends, families, livers etc.

No job means I am still looking for my million dollars job. If I accepted $$$cheap$$$ I became $$$$cheap$$$ $ for life time.

How would they know that the "graduates" (?) chose not to engage in full-time permanent work-or is it because they CANNOT
find full time/permanent work. Did they survey all ITE/POLY leavers or just do a sampling?
How come more and more ITE/poly leavers cannot find work and yet number of foreigners keep going up and have no problems finding work.
70% voted to replace our ITE/poly cert/diploma holders with foreigners?
Isn't this Puthucheary a former Malaysian who did not serve NS in Singapore-how come can still be citizen and minister?
Why so many locals get send to jail for evading NS-I don't understand this part as I serve 15 years reservist faithfully and yet some do not need to serve!

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Education (MOE) will conduct an in-depth study on “underlying forces” driving polytechnic and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) graduates’ decisions to undertake employment or further study, said Minister of State for Education Janil Puthucheary.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6), he noted there has been a drop in the percentage of polytechnic and ITE graduates who reported they were in full-time permanent employment, based on survey data of the graduates six months after they complete their final examinations. At the same time, more are opting for freelance, part-time or temporary work, he said.

In 2007, some 77 per cent of polytechnic and ITE graduates reported that they were in full-time permanent employment. This fell to 58 per cent in 2016, or a decline of 19 percentage points, he said.

Yes, spoilt lazy young sinkies opt not to work, like pampered mediocre old sinkies. So no choice! Have to open the gates wider. It’s a national shame!
