SINGAPORE - A man forged signatures on hospital documents to receive more than $340,000 worth of treatment and plastic surgery.
Jashankar Marimuttu, 46, cheated eight hospitals including Singapore General, Tan Tock Seng and Gleneagles.
The Singaporean also duped the hospitals into making Medisave deductions totalling more than $44,000 from two victims he had come to know - Mr Soundrarajan Jeeva and Mr Kumarana Pakirsamy.
Jashankar was jailed for five years and fined $1,000 on Tuesday (Feb 6).
Last December he pleaded guilty to 16 counts of committing forgery for the purpose of cheating and one count of making unauthorised access to computer materials ,
Twenty-nine other charges, including 17 more counts of committing forgery for the purpose of cheating and seven counts of theft, were considered during sentencing.
His offences were committed between August 2010 and October 2016.
The court heard that Jashankar got hold of Mr Soundrarajan's personal details in 2013 while they were working as tour guides. He obtained Mr Kumarana's information while renting a room from the latter's father.
On Dec 4, 2013, Jashankar pretended to be Mr Kumarana and sought treatment at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital for a urinary tract infection.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ian Ernst Chai said Jashankar told hospital administrative staff that he could give his personal details only verbally and claimed his brother had his NRIC.
Jashankar then forged the victim's signature on the agreement for hospital services and the Medisave authorisation form.
DPP Chai said that in January 2014, after receiving treatment costing more than $145,000, Jashankar told a nurse that he would fetch his brother "Jeeva" to settle the bill.
Instead he absconded and the hospital could not contact him.
Using a similar method, he later pretended to be Mr Soundrarajan to seek treatment at places including SGH and Gleneagles Hospital where he was admitted for a kidney inflammation.
On Sept 4, 2015, Mr Soundrarajan checked his Central Provident Fund account and discovered that his Medisave account was empty. He lodged a police report three days later.
Jashankar was caught after he went to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in January 2016 and pretended to be Mr Soundrarajan to seek treatment.
The court heard that he has not made any restitution and the hospitals have since refunded the Medisave deductions to his two victims.
For each count of committing forgery for the purpose of cheating, he could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined.
