SOCIAL-NETWORKING sites are the new tools of choice for overseas drug syndicates trying to recruit Singaporean women to work as drug mules.
The Internet, as well as local pubs, has become the favourite haunts of West African traffickers, who are increasingly turning to young women to smuggle their contraband, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) warned yesterday in a statement.
In the past four months, 12 women from Singapore were caught smuggling drugs - such as heroin and cocaine - in a range of countries including Australia, Britain and Japan.
This is an alarming surge, compared to the seven caught between 2005 and 2007. Some are already serving time in the respective countries, with one jailed in London for 10 years two years ago.
Their West African "boyfriends", mostly Nigerians aged 20 to 30, had come here on social-visit passes, claiming to be businessmen dealing in used cars or electronic goods.
These Casanovas befriend the women through the websites, and woo them with promises of love, free holidays and cold hard cash, thus cajoling them into becoming their drug runners.
The women fly from Singapore to another country to pick up the drugs - usually in suitcases with false bottoms - and deliver them to another country. They are promised between US$1,000 ($1,550) and US$4,000 for each run.
In 2007, one Nigerian talked a woman into swallowing 64 cocaine pellets in Bangkok before flying to Melbourne, where she was nabbed.
A CNB spokesman said the syndicate members typically target single women, aged 20 to 30, who are either unemployed or working in clerical, sales and service jobs.
More importantly, all the women do not have criminal records.
The spokesman advised anyone who felt that they might be used as drug mules to contact the bureau on 1800-325-6666.
There are also cases where Caucasian boyfriend or "husbands" would disappear usually right before child birth or even earlier; leaving the Singapore women and their families to settle his Problems.
