PARLIAMENT yesterday approved the allocation of an additional $1.25 million to the Civil List, which specifies the salaries of the President, his personal staff, and expenditure.

The amount set aside for the President's salary is $4,267,500, up from $3,376,800. The entertainment allowance remains at $73,000. The amount for staff salaries increases by $471,600 to $4,532,400.

Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said these increases were to cater for an additional staff officer to support the work of the Council of Presidential Advisers, a butler manager to meet the increased demand for butler services at the Istana, and to meet higher variable payments on account of strong economic growth.

The President's salary rises in tandem with that of political, judicial and civil service appointment holders. Meanwhile, the sum for Istana expenses was cut by $25,300 to $2,068,300. The total sum allocated for the Civil List is $11.6 million.

For the next financial year, Mr Tharman said this overall sum will remain unchanged, but the allocation for the President's salary and allowances will drop to $3,782,000 due to lower variable payments anticipated. An extra $610,000 will be set aside for the Presidential Swearing-in Ceremony which is likely to be in late August.

Let's do a comparison between our little red dot and the country with the highest GDP.

The GDP of Singapore in 2009 is USD 182,000,000,000 ($182B) and that of USA is USD14,000,000,000,000 ($14T). If the President of Singapore gets USD3.3M, surely the President of USA should be getting USD253.4M, and it is a executive position, not just shaking hands, kissing babies and cutting ribbons. But no, President Obama's salary stands at USD400,000.

I pity the Americans, their president is only drawing $400,00 a year. All he can look forward to after his term is going round the dinner talks and probably a memoir, not to mention the billions he's getting through corrupt means.

OK, if Obama's salary is $200M for a GDP of $14T, then conversely Prataman's salary should be $2.6M.

Now, $2.6M looks a little more decent and even acceptable, you say, but it is not. The title of President may be the same, the job scope is not. To say managing a country like the USA is difficult is way, way, an understatement, the domestic problems, the state of economy not only of the US but also the world at large, the Middle East up in flames, the Mexicans drug lords snapping at their borders, no-holds-bar media which he can't suppress, etc etc, not to mention the next elections.

Our ornamental President, besides kissing babies and cutting ribbons, is a shoo-in for the next election, as long LKY sanctions it and as he don't wear wigs or swig whiskey by the bottles. All he really needs to do is read prepared speeches and well, try his best to look 'Presidential'.

Given the difference in job scopes, I reckon all he deserves is 10% of the $2.6M, and I am being fucking generous, this is assuming Pres. Obama is getting his $200/year, which he is not.

So, realistically, all he should get is maybe $26,000/year, but then we can't have a corrupted president, can we?

I agree with you totally on the fact that the pay does not correlate with work done. But the problem lies with the high salary for ministers and of course, the PM. The president's pay must be higher than the PM, period. Social justice, accountability, morality, etc etc are concepts that are not compatible with political pay structures.

If our dear president has a conscience, he should admit like a man that he doesn't deserve such an obscene salary. His current salary increase only makes it even more obscene. Why would they question salary increase? They r dying for prataman to increase 1st and then their turn to increase.

I opine the old amount was already excessively excessive. Disappointed that SL, LTK and CST said nothing. Or maybe they did, but I didn't get to read about it.

If this GE still only PP and HG and 66.6% for the MIW, S'poreans deserve to get screwed front and back.
