Singapore bank branch in Thailand robbed
05:55 AM Sep 01, 2010
BANGKOK - A gunman walked away with 8 million baht ($346,600) in cash after raiding a UOB branch in north-eastern Thailand in a heist that, in the words of a senior policeman, seemed to have gone off too easily.
Bank manager Sarika Buakaew said three security personnel from G4S International Group arrived by van to deposit 18 million baht in cash at the bank branch in Khon Kaen province at about 8.50am on Monday, the Bangkok Post reported.
As they were placing five bags of cash into the bank's vault, a gun-wielding man forced the security guard and the bank employees into the room where the money was being stored, Ms Sarika said.
The man, who was wearing a black helmet and jacket, grabbed two bags and fled on a motorcycle.
Khon Kaen deputy police chief Thawatchai Nilanutch said initial investigations suggested that the heist seemed to have gone off too easily. He said investigators would question bank and G4S staff to determine if any of them had links with the robber.
In Singapore, a UOB spokesperson told MediaCorp: "We have been informed of the robbery. However, we are unable to comment as police investigations are currently ongoing."
