Singapore ambassador to USA Mirpuri alludes that Singapore is so overcrowded, that opportunities for civil protest are fast running out (as implied).
Anyway, I don't quite buy his claims that 1000s can congregate at speakers corner (at least the toilets there cannot handle so many people and the entire space is actually quite small).
Anyway, truth probably is that the PAP is so AFRAID and paranoid of dissent, that just one person holding a placard has to be neutralized ASAP.
Probably the PAP government needs to review Singapore's urban design and roll back on their population aspirations a bit, so Singapore is less of the dense sweat shop (powder keg) that it now is.

“He added that given how densely populated Singapore is, the approach is to allow public protests only at Speakers' Corner or with a permit, so that the authorities can assess the public-order risks. He noted that protest rallies numbering in the thousands have been held at Speakers' Corner.” https://www.straitstimes.com/singap...gapores-us-ambassador-after-protesters-arrest
