Thailand looks to cut Malacca Strait shipping time by land link between Indian, Pacific Oceans
  • The highway and rail passageway connecting the two oceans would bypass the congested Strait of Malacca off Malaysia and Singapore
  • Thailand says the 100km ‘land bridge’ between two seaports would replace previous plans for a canal, and would cut shipping time by over two days

Thailand is looking to construct a land passageway that would connect the Indian and Pacific Oceans, bypassing one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

The Strait of Malacca, a narrow sea lane along Peninsular Malaysia’s southwest coast and extending east past Singapore, is currently the shortest sea route linking the Asia-Pacific region with India and the Middle East. About a quarter of the world’s traded goods pass through it each year.

“The Strait has become quite congested,” Transport Minister Saksiam Chidchob said.
“Using an alternative route through Thailand would cut shipping time by more than two days, which is very valuable for businesses.”

Thailand plans to build two deep seaports on either side of the country’s southern coasts, and link them via highway and rail, according to Saksiam

The 100km “land bridge” would replace an existing proposal to dredge a canal through the isthmus. That would cause too much destruction to the environment, he said.

The idea for a canal that would traverse the nation’s narrowest point
and trim the travel distance by 1,200km (745 miles) has been put forward and dismissed several times over the past few decades.

Bangkok is at the centre of Thailand’s biggest rail development project in almost 70 years, with its completion set to enable train travel to China and Singapore and connect most major Thai cities to Bangkok and its expanding transit systems.
The Thai government has committed to spending more than US$21billion to expand Bangkok’s rail transit, extend train lines and build high-speed rails, with a US$1.3billion hub that will become South-east Asia’s largest train station when it opens in 2021.

This move will not only seek to ease air pollution, but overhaul its dated train systems to boost Thailand’s slowest growth in five years due to a drought and slump in tourism as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Voravuth Mala, acting governor, State Railway of Thailand told Bloomberg in a report that the weak global economy and low interest rates are good indicators for investing in infrastructure.
More than 22 million passengers is expected to be served and 30 million tons of commodities transported from track doubling after the upgrade. Phase one of the 608km rail is already under construction, whereas the second phase which would connect to the Chinese railway in Laos, is under design.

Two days savings in sailing days not worth transhipment as the cost of loading and unloading will be more than plus time taken to do that may be even more.
Smart Malay. Two days of saving is too insignificant compared if 2 weeks of saving achieved by Suez Canal (Africa continent) and Panama Canal (South American Continent). Malaysia is only a Peninsular and not even a continent.

Singapore and Malaysia got hope of more Malays are as smart as Sai Puteh

hanar, this has ben discussed from the days of tan chin tiong (mfa) in the 80's - as that would physically cut-off thailand's pro-autonomous communist south from the capitalistic north, and that will not be sabai-dee
moreover, jihadist south will fight with commie south for dominance and songkhla will be sung as a bygone song.

KNN by the time we Sinkies are able to board the high speed train from Singapore all the way to Bangkok, I think I already in Heaven liao... Those muddle head Mats up north are still confusing one another with the total project costs for their railway projects. Previous Govt Pakatan said one thing, BN now said another...

I think it would be a great idea to sit inside a train and enjoy the kampung scenery, the hills, the paddy fields....
