A Thai woman who prayed to the Chinese god of love at the Yueh Hai Ching Temple located on Phillip Street at Raffles Place met her Singaporean partner two months later.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the 28-year-old Singaporean student, Yang Zi Hao, (all names in hanyu pinyin) said that his wife, 23-year-old Pimmada, arrived in Singapore in May 2022 on a two-week long holiday, following the re-opening of borders.
According to Yang, Pimmada heard that devotees had their wishes fulfilled after praying at Yueh Hai Ching Temple, and she decided to pay the temple a visit.
Prayed for the fortune of the family and a good relationship
However, the temple was closed on her first visit, and she ended up offering her prayers while standing outside its doors.
She decided to pay a second visit to the temple, and prayed for peace and prosperity for herself and her family.
Yang added that following this, a relative of hers who was in financial difficulties struck the lottery, which left her in awe.
His now-wife then decided to pay one more visit to the temple just before leaving Singapore.
This time, she prayed to Chinese god of love Yue Lao, in hopes of being blessed with a partner.
Met husband-to-be in Thailand
Two months later, she met Yang at a gathering hosted by a friend in Thailand.
At the time, Yang was studying for a master's degree in marketing in the country.
Yang added that the fell in love with her at first sight and asked her out three times afterwards.
However, he also pointed out that she didn't think much of him at first.
"But after both of us got to know each other, she felt I was dependable, and decided to get together with me," he said.
Three months later, they got into a relationship. They decided to tie the knot after half a year of dating.
Used Google Translate to communicate
Yang was also quoted by Shin Min as saying that they initially faced with a language barrier as Pimmada could only speak Thai and had difficulties expressing herself in English.
This meant that the couple had to use Google Translate to communicate.
Yang could only communicate with Pimmada in basic Thai as he had taken language classes in Thailand.
In the meantime, Pimmada is studying English, while Yang is continuing with his Thai classes in order to ease the communication barrier.
Gave thanks at the temple when they registered their marriage in Singapore
Yang added that when the couple returned to Singapore for their ceremony at the Registry of Marriage (ROM), they also went to the temple to give thanks.
They will be holding their marriage ceremony in Thailand this November.
