Singapore Air Loss Is More Bad News for Temasek

It seems that Temasek Holdings, which in September posted a record 67 percent drop in net profit for the year ended March 31, can’t get no satisfaction from its investments these days.

Singapore Airlines, which is majority owned by the sovereign wealth fund, reported a worse-than-expected quarterly loss as the global economic slowdown affected profit margins but said the outlook had improved.

The airline, which warned in July that it might post a full-year loss if tough conditions persisted, had a net loss of 159 million Singapore dollars, or $114.6 million, for the three months through September, compared with a net profit of 324 million dollars a year earlier.

Five analysts polled by Reuters had expected an average net loss of 38 million dollars. The loss was narrower than the 307 million dollars recorded in the previous three-month period.

“Advance bookings indicate that demand for air travel has stopped declining and is gradually recovering,” Singapore Airlines said in a statement.

The carrier has seen falling passenger and cargo demand this year as the global economic downturn has reduced business and leisure travel, leading the airline to reduce capacity by 11 percent in the 12 months from April. The airline also cut staff salaries and working hours.

Analysts said the growing presence of budget airlines in the region was making life tougher for premium carriers like Singapore Airlines and Japan Airlines. Budget carriers like AirAsia of Malaysia and JetStar of Australia are on an aggressive expansion drive despite the economic downturn.

JAL is undergoing a restructuring and negotiating for further government support after accumulating billions of dollars in losses, while Singapore Airlines has been forced to delay deliveries of eight airplanes from Airbus by 6 to 12 months

The report comes amid tough times for Temasek, which owns 55 percent of the airline. The wealth fund reported a record 67 percent drop in net profit for the year ended March 31, as a collapse in credit markets drove down the value of its stakes including holdings in Bank of America and Barclays.

The fund is trying to get its house in order after a tumultuous year, suffering not only from its bad bets on Western banks, but also a failed experiment to get a prominent outsider as its chief executive.

You're right.

In these perverted times, the more losses they make, the more they get in bonuses.

Fat cats get bonuses, executive managers get pay freeze, middle managers get percentage pay cut, Singaporeans slaves get sacked and replaced by FTs .

I remember when LKY threatened to close SIA during pay negotiations with the pilots. Its interesting that the higher ups get all kinds of bonuses but the employees get pay cuts & layoffs.

There are profitable airlines but poorly run airlines are bleeding worldwide. SIA obvious belongs to the poorly run category & I suspect the problem is endemic & at the top.

With more competition from younger & hungrier airlines, I doubt SIA with all those expensive scholars can compete at all. I think its time to consider selling off the national carrier.

I recommend LKY & Co save tax $$$ by taking Airasia

Interesting observation.
The 86 year old has always regarded this company as "THE SINGAPORE BRAND "
and has intervened many times (including sending in the late President Devan Nair) to sort things out. His silence (at least in public) shows a lack of ideas on how to fix the problem? Highest paid in the world but unable to solve problems better than those paid much less?

Not only scholars but also many x-military types seems to be posted there in senior management positions .
Are these the best people to tackle the job?

Of course SIA is poorly run. They take in all the head ex-military into senior positions. WTF does an ex General know about running operations?

SIA is competing in the real world. Its been shown that the PAP's meritocracy is a failure outside Spore where there is real competition.

I'm not sure a pay cut is enough. If these people are allowed to remain in SIA, the company will die a slow death.

Don't expect LKY to admit his mistake in creating these useless scholars. So they will continue to be a drag on Spore's economy

....

What is the SINGAPORE BRAND

Korea has Samsung, Hundyai,.... Taiwan has ACER, ASUS,...

SIA is a service related company. The uniforms were designed by Pierre Balmain, the pilots are mostly foreigners. As we all know Spore has problems with SERVICE

LKY's bullying tactics may have driven down salaries but you end up with low morale. Are there any Sporeans who still think they can have a career in SIA:confused:
