Looking at the rallies this time round of such a scale in more than 3 decades, there was a consistent anomaly that kept bugging me. The PAP MPs claim that they will debate on policy, but in the end, they hardly did and what they did showed very weak knowledge. Then it occurred to me - THEY REALLY DO NOT KNOW.
Anyone with dealings with the bureaucratic system here, will know that people within the department or across ministries do not know basic policy matters that should be made public in any country in the world, even at senior management levels! They hide behind email requests and claims of secrecy when actually the issue replies have been classified as unclassified. What has happened is probably besides the old man and a select few, information flow is that screwed up. Ministers read from ghost writer scripts and you can guess that the ghost writer has very weak access to facts and figures, thus, literature prose writing of the lowest standards to plug the holes.
We are talking to people who seriously do not know the mechanics of the policies that they implement. As for the old man, even with all the facts and figures, actually he does not know much. He appeals to truisms which are not very useful in dynamic socioeconomic systems linked to the world. Basically, Singapore is run like an corporation with only a really handful of people in control and accountable to only themselves, thus, so litter public accountability and transparency in their actions/policies. This is frightening and needs to be changed now
