Then there is his vast experience at 16 different clubs in six countries and successful spells with both Switzerland and Finland.

How he took the Swiss to the last 16 of the 1994 World Cup.

How he guided Finland to their highest-ever world ranking of 33rd.

How he has had two spells managing Inter Milan, once taking them to the UEFA Cup Final.

How he guided Fulham to the Europa League Final.

At a time when the FA want their manager to embrace every level of coaching, Hodgson fits like a glove.

There is much to applaud in all this but perhaps the greatest plus about his appointment for so many of us is that at least it wasn’t Stuart Pearce.

Let’s just hope it’s not a cunning ploy by the FA to eventually give Psycho the job.

And yet there will be many unimpressed by Hodgson’s elevation to the England post

ok, he has bags of experience. But wait a minute, din't he screw up Liverpool big time?

ok, so he bring West Brom to safety, but talking about exceeding expectations - didn't Sam Allyadace do a good job too?

honestly, i am not impressed. yes, he did a splendid job at West Brom. But the fact he screwed big time at Liverpool speaks as such. Bcos in England's role, you will be managing big names, big egos and big expectations.
