Shin Min: SDP seems to be 'quite quiet' this elections

Shin Min Daily emailed the Singapore Democrats and commented that the SDP has been "quite quiet" this election. The newspaper also said that the SDP did not "grab the attention" of the people. The newspaper then asked how and when we were going to step up our campaign efforts.

Readers of this website will agree that the observations and questions of this newspaper seem rather bizarre. The SDP has been faithfully reporting all our campaign activities and few will disagree that we have been one of the most active political parties in Singapore.

And yet the journalist from Shin Min did not seem to know this. With news about the SDP being played down by the state media, is it any wonder that even SPH journalists don't seem to know what the SDP has been doing?

Dear Ms Kok,

1. Some people have commented that SDP seems to be quite quiet for this upcoming election. There hasn't been much action from SDP in terms of introducing new candidates. What do you have to say?

If there is such a view that the SDP is quiet during this election period, it is because the mass media are not reporting fairly about us. A quick check on our website will show that we are the most active party in Singapore.

And this is not just during the election period. We have been working hard both online (where we update our website everyday, post regular videos, keep active Facebook and Twitter accounts) and on the ground (where we carry out walkabouts, house visits, staged pre-election rallies, conducted an election dry-run, hold fund-raisers, etc). How did you even get the impression that the SDP has been "quite quiet" for this election?

2. Some people commented that Workers Party seemed to be the most prominent opposition party and SDP does not seem to "grab the attention" of the residents and even PAP. What do you have to say?

Again this is because the Mediacorp and SPH either censors or downplays news about the SDP. One good example is CNA. PAP and WP have been invited to every programme on the channel. SDP, on the other hand, has been excluded. We were only invited to one of its programmes after we protested against the discrimination. Is it any wonder then that the SDP does not "grab the attention" of the residents?

3. Does SDP intend to step up its campaigning efforts? How and when?

The right question to ask is: Does the mass media intend to give fair and proper coverage to the SDP and our activities?

Chee has a PhD from Geogia Tech? That's quite a good school in the South

Of course he beats all the O Levels Ah Bengs like cooleo here :D

CSJ seem to be launching a personal crusade against the SPH and Mediacorp. He have been criticizing them intensely during the last couple of weeks. Would be wise to make use of them instead of fighting against them. The traditional media is still the portal which can reach out to the general masses most effectively even if they are a bit bais
