She claims she's a "victim" of new give-way-to-bus rule
A reader expresses shock at being fined $130 for not giving way to a bus, maintaining that she did not know such a scheme had been implemented, Stomp reported.
The reader told Stomp she had noticed many yellow banners near areas with bus-stops, saying "Mandatory Give Way to Buses" but did not give much thought to it.
Until she received a letter from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), that is.
That letter asked her to cough up a sum of $130 for not giving way to a bus, Stomp reported.
Further evidence - still photographs - were also shown to the reader. But she protested, "What can still photos prove in scenarios like that?"
She told Stomp she had expected to see some form of video-recording so as to establish a benchmark of "giving way".
The reader also protested indignantly that she has never received any of the 600,000 brochures LTA sent out to motorists as part of the Give Way to Buses campaign.
When she went down to the LTA office to pay the fine, she also noticed "many victims of this new scheme" queuing up to pay for the same offence.
A person was also overheard telling an officer that he didn't know there was such a rule for buses. To which the officer replied, "Never mind, now you pay you know."
The reader finally lamented, "Why must the fine be that heavy?"
"There is inadequate public education on this."
"If they insist that $130 is necessary to enforce this rule, shouldn't we receive a warning letter first?"
Do you know of such a rule and do you think the fine is too heavy? Send in your comments to [email protected]
