She claims she's a "victim" of new give-way-to-bus rule

A reader expresses shock at being fined $130 for not giving way to a bus, maintaining that she did not know such a scheme had been implemented, Stomp reported.

The reader told Stomp she had noticed many yellow banners near areas with bus-stops, saying "Mandatory Give Way to Buses" but did not give much thought to it.

Until she received a letter from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), that is.

That letter asked her to cough up a sum of $130 for not giving way to a bus, Stomp reported.

Further evidence - still photographs - were also shown to the reader. But she protested, "What can still photos prove in scenarios like that?"

She told Stomp she had expected to see some form of video-recording so as to establish a benchmark of "giving way".

The reader also protested indignantly that she has never received any of the 600,000 brochures LTA sent out to motorists as part of the Give Way to Buses campaign.

When she went down to the LTA office to pay the fine, she also noticed "many victims of this new scheme" queuing up to pay for the same offence.

A person was also overheard telling an officer that he didn't know there was such a rule for buses. To which the officer replied, "Never mind, now you pay you know."

The reader finally lamented, "Why must the fine be that heavy?"

"There is inadequate public education on this."

"If they insist that $130 is necessary to enforce this rule, shouldn't we receive a warning letter first?"

Do you know of such a rule and do you think the fine is too heavy? Send in your comments to [email protected]

Whichever way we lose - private car drivers or bus commuters. Only LTA wins.

It is a very cheap way to make money, low cost & high returns. Just set some ambgious rules, here & there, voila!...money to recoup the losses.

$130 x 20 motorists a day, x 30 days a month = S$78,000 a month

$78,000 x 12 months = $936,000 a year

LTA is more of a money making organization than an enforcer of safety, it enforcers safely the ejection of money from your wallets, that what it enforces.

Actually there is an underlying problem with this rule, if you are a regular motorist that needs to travel around the whole day as part of your vocation, you will notice in certain heavily congested areas like paya lebar, eunos...ETC it is quite difficult to filter out once you turned from a side road into a main road with a bus lane :( and if you don't filter out before the dotted yellow lines runs out you may be booked for being in a bus lane,

and if you try to very slowly inched your way to filter out, you may be booked by the bus cameras on the bus behind for blocking & not giving way to them :(

Both ways you also die, unless you are one of those drivers that have this mentality "just ka-ka filter out and force the other motorist to give way instead of the courteous  way" than this doesn't applys to you

I see it more as complains from an inconsiderate driver. In the first place she should be giving way to buses. Now that they made it a rule, there's even more reason for her to give way to buses. You don't see me or my family getting fined for not giving way to buses. It's pretty straight forward, if you don't like to pay stupid fines and fattening the PAP man's wallet, be more considerate.

Its the same as that stupid thread about PAP trying to get back money by making pple pay fines for littering. By simply NOT LITTERING, you can avoid fattening PAP's wallet

that's peanuts lah, really. it takes more than $1m to build 1 lane of 1km of highway. LTA uses the money to build and maintain roads. if u drive regularly, u'll notice lots of new viaducts etc being built to speed up traffic flow.

serriously, i'd rate LTA and the NPB as two of the better stat boards in singapore.

hmmm... not sure i agree with u there. me thinks LTA budget is in the 100s of millions each yr, so i think squeezing another 1M here, 1M there, not really their priority.

anyway, i think the give way to bus thing is great. i'm a driver, but i agree that buses should have priority on the roads, considering they carry many more commuters than a single passenger car.
