SINGAPORE — A music video by social media personality Preeti Nair and her brother Subhas in which they mocked a controversial advertisement has “crossed the line” by insulting Chinese people, said Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Tuesday (30 July).

“This rap video insults Chinese Singaporeans, uses four-letter words on Chinese Singaporeans, vulgar gestures, pointing of middle finger – to make minorities angry with Chinese Singaporeans,” he said during a media doorstop.

Those who see something they do not like should ask for an apology from the offending party, Shanmugam advised. “If you think it’s criminal, you make a police report. You don’t yourself cross the line,” he added.

In the video posted on Facebook on Monday, Preeti – who goes by the moniker Preetipls – and her brother mock an advertisement for the E-Pay service in which Mediacorp actor Dennis Chew was depicted as four different characters, including an Indian man with artificially darkened skin and a Malay woman wearing a headscarf.

The advertisement, which has since been taken down from the E-Pay site, was widely criticised for being racially insensitive. Mediacorp has since apologised for the advertisement and stated any hurt caused was unintentional.

Shanmugam said that the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) had asked Facebook to remove the video from its platform. As of Tuesday evening, it was no longer available on Facebook or YouTube.

A spokesperson from the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) said IMDA had issued a notice to Preetipls and Subhas to take down the video and they have complied.

“IMDA has assessed that the video by Preetipls and Subhas constitutes prohibited content under the Internet Code of Practice, that is objectionable on grounds of public interest and national harmony.”

Ya. Seems more like a rap video directed against Singapore government for paying mediacorpse to produce videos which excludes minorities from being casted through their in house method of painting Chinese actors face black so as to save $$$ on hiring minorities for their respective roles.

Dunno if Jack Neo has this practice of short changing minorities too as they seem to allude.

Don't think racism was their intension although their rap was very much in your face.

Only those high strung or have siege mentality would get easily offended.

Learning opportunity lost due to K Shamuggam knee jerk reaction.

Basically they are angry actors who felt that Mediacorpse discriminated against them by painting Chinese actors faces black to represent the minority characters on numerous occasions and is excessively elitist in it's casting selections.

I think their concerns are valid:

Don't short change minorities of jobs:

Just pick up the phone, she is waiting for you to call her for her role:

Don't just have one superstar. Include as many actors as possible.

Two different Wongs is better than Mediacorp getting it twice wrong.

Hopefully K Shamuggam will not miss the forest for the trees and allow mediacorpse to continue to short change talented minority race actors and also be too money faced, trying to earn more $$$ from minorities but not having any budget to hire minority race actors and instead substituting minority race actors with Chinese actors with blackened faces to represent minority race consumers.

Singapore companies want to earn $$$ from minority race consumers:

But yet have zero budget to properly advertise using minority race actors and instead (insultingly) substitute minority race actors with Chinese actors with their faces painted black:

All video producers should be licensed in Singapore.

The first home video license should be awarded to Nas Daily it seems and production/ uploading without a video license shall be punishable as treason against the state.

Nas should also be appointed chairman of the Singapore board of film censors:

Media corp a stat board would need to answer why it could not hire ethic minorities to play the role of ethic minority in a government approved advert...not hide behind the coattails of a minister..two wrongs dosent equal one right

actually the whole ePay ad would not have erupted so badly if they portray the minorities not so comically

you don't see the Eurasian talk anything abt it, cos the portrayal don't look too bad

when i saw the ad with the comical pose of Malay in tudong and the Indian with tummy, know it's not good

if Dennis Chew did the Malay in tudong with a sincere smile and the Indian looking fit like the Nair guy who did the racist video, think won't have all these happening
Hiaz:
All have lost the plot lah.
My interpretation:

Preetipls and bro Subhash are just protesting that they didn't get their due gigs to portray minority race characters because mediacorp and other GLC short changed them of acting gigs by conveniently painting the face of a Chinese actor brown and having him wear a tudung etc.

The race reason is just the vehicle to prove that they have been systematically exploited and sidelined even in government funded videos for acting jobs to sell products to all races.

Most likely if we created a parody video with all races caricaturing another race by all painting their faces, all wearing other race costumes, this would be 100% okay, as long as ALL the main race actors were hired and PAID a reasonable wage for acting in a national advertisement.

So REALLY the problem is the sidelining of minority race and stealing of their bread. Pity that many including the PAP cabinet have missed the forest for the trees and think that it is just a 'blackface' issue when the problem is actually the systematic sidelining of minority races from employment and other life opportunities.

Government $$$ was used to create the advertisement and campaign.
s0DDmd9.jpg

Only a very limited number of people benefited from the government funded campaign resulting in jobs for minority race actors being "cancelled":
SzlNNS7.jpg

Even a Machik was sidelined as well (although the target audience for the advertisement included Malay people as well):
Oy22Yib.jpg

More actors should have been hired for a national advertisement, rather than just a single Mediacorp superstar (whose popularity and career Mediacorp wishes to promote using government funds):
shNAj7B.jpg

The cancellation of gigs for minority race actors seems to happen often enough for them to be doubtful and skeptical that the national budget is fair to all:
hi1Mx57.jpg

Their protest is thus that Mediacorp likes to paint Chinese actors faces brown to promote elitism/ save $$$ and thus in the process, shortchanging minority race actors of acting gigs and thus sidelining minority communities by promoting elitism in Singapore:

Root of the problem in this saga in Singapore: exclusivity and exclusion of others by old boys club and other elites in Singapore:

The moment minorities speak up, they are tormented, persecuted and prosecuted for doing the same things chinese do on them everyday with no repercussion.
