Syngenta Biotechnology breaks ground on $100M China investment
Triangle Business Journal - by Jeff Drew
Syngenta Biotechnology Inc., a Research Triangle Park-based subsidiary of Swiss giant Syngenta AG (NYSE: SYT), will invest $100 million over the next five years to expand its operations in China.
Syngenta Biotechnology says in a press release that it broke ground last week on a new building that will serve as the permanent home of Syngenta Biotechnology (China) Co., Ltd., or SBC, which Syngenta says is the first foreign-invested biotech research institution in China.
SBC, which was established last year, already has more than 70 employees at its temporary location in Beijing’s Zhongguancun Life Science Park.
“This is an important milestone for biotechnology at Syngenta” said Michiel van Lookeren Campagne, president of Syngenta Biotechnology, Inc. “The capability expansion in China, combined with that of our U.S. biotechnology facility, will enable us to continue providing new solutions that increase crop yield and productivity, and offer additional choices for growers.”
Syngenta Biotechnology announced Dec. 7 that it had leased an additional 100,000 square feet and signed a contract to purchase 50 more acres in RTP, where the company currently employs 400 people.
